Home Sweet Home: The Tooth Fairy

Alex turned 5 in July. He’s in kindergarten, he’s learning to read and write and if all of that isn’t enough he has his very first loose tooth! Where have the last 5 years gone and when did my baby turn into such a big boy?!

Ok, so while I’m trying to get over the shock of it all I’ve been immersing myself in the preparations for the much-anticipated inaugural visit from the tooth fairy. First, we had to help him get past his fears. At first Alex was terrified of loosing a tooth… “How will I eat my food?….I’ll be soooo hungry!”, “Will it hurt?”, “I’m scared of the tooth fairy… is she mean?”… Every Friday at school for the last 3 weeks he’s checked out a new book from the library about the tooth fairy and now he’s got the basics down. He’s actually pretty psyched. Tooth fairy = money for his piggy bank. He’s saving up to buy a yellow convertible for his 16th birthday (I like his ambition). Since we’re past all of the concerns, I’m now able to get into fun mommy (ahem, tooth fairy) stuff like this….

But I need your help, please. Since this will be the first tooth fairy visit to our house I am conducting some unofficial research… what’s the going rate for a tooth these days?

  1. Inflation abounds. Going rate is $2/tooth at my house, a far cry from the .25 that I routinely got. Our oldest Emma is 11 and now is keen on who the tooth fairy is, a whole other phase in child raising, one wrought with reality and the absence of fairies. It is a sad transition indeed. Enjoy these years as they are fleeting.

    • The big question is… will Emma fill Beck in or will she let him continue to believe for a little bit longer?! :-) I loved your post from 9/19, Tami, and couldn’t agree more with those sentiments. It’s all going so quickly. We are lucky, indeed. xo

I love his enthusiasm about teeth! I was the same way when I was younger and now I’m a dentist! The going rate in my area, Philly, PA is $1

  3. Elise commented:

The first tooth was $20, and each tooth thereafter $5. Seems to be the norm around here (Seattle). Or maybe I’m just trying to justify being an overly generous tooth fairy!??

  4. My husbands family does silver dollars so I am always scouting for them at antique malls. Unfortunately for us, the price of silver has skyrocketed so they are hard to come by, but my kids have tidy little investments going!

  5. I remember the tooth fairy giving me quarters, so $1.00 seems like a kid is going to be rich. I’ll be doing this research down the road so very interesting to see what people are saying. I’m glad Nancy from PA said $1/tooth ;)

  6. So funny Krista….do we have the same kid? Ours turned 5 in July and she has her first loose tooth too! Same fears and all! I’m planning on taking her to the library to find books today as well. I’ve been told $5 a tooth too. That seems way too high! But maybe the first one will be $5 and then on we’ll do $1. She doesn’t really know how much that is anyways. :)

    • We are definitely on parallel paths, Shelly! The books worked wonders for Alex so hopefully it will help in your house as well. Keep me posted when she looses her first tooth! I think we’re going with something similar – like higher for the first tooth but then each tooth after will be $1. Such fun! Hope you are well. xo
